American Theology

I’ve been recognizing lately how different American civil religion is from biblical Christianity.

Here’s a representative snippet of a speech Ronald Reagan gave at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Center in 1986 – “So it is that when we dedicate this Center, Mr. President, we dedicate an institution that testifies, as does your life itself, to the goodness of God and to the blessings He bestows upon those who do their best to walk with Him.”

How different this is than – “To the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness” (Rom. 4:5).
