Some Thoughts at the Outset of TGC11

One of the most exciting things happening right now in evangelicalism is a wide-spread recovery of the gospel, represented in conferences like Together for the Gospel and The Gospel Coalition. Since 2007, every April I have gone to one of these conferences. Since 2008 it has become a reunion time with old friends in ministry scattered around the country. It is so refreshing, envigorating, encouraging, and exciting. This week is The Gospel Coalition Conference right here in downtown Chicago. Later today my friends arive to stay with us. And this year Andrea gets to go with me! I’m pumped.

As I was reflecting in anticipation of the week ahead this morning, in my regular Bible Reading plan I came to these passages from the Psalms:

Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish (Ps. 146:3,4).

His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

Tim Keller and Don Carson will soon die. Our trust is not in them or the movement they have led. God delights not in the mere fact that several thousand will gather in a conference center; neither should we. May we be protected from a hero worship and prideful triumphalism this week. May Christ truly be glorified and the gospel cherished! His kingdom is forever!
